Golfbreak at Montrose Golf Links

Montrose Golf Links

Struggling to find the perfect golfing gift this Christmas?

Looking for something a little bit different?

Well, have you ever thought of giving a golf break as a Christmas Gift?  It’s not as expensive as you may think, especially if you take advantage of reduced green fees between now and the end of March.  Today we take a look at one of Scotland’s Top 100 golf courses at Montrose Golf Links on the East coast of Scotland.

Montrose Golf Links – 1562 Course

Montrose Golf Links sits on the East Coast of Scotland, between Aberdeen (40 miles) & Dundee (38 miles).

Golf has been played here since 1562, so it’s no surprise that the main course is called the 1562 course.  It’s a testing links course with undulating fairways and pot bunkers that you’ll want to avoid.  The real challenge has not been created or nurtured by man, no, the main test here is the wind.  And the wind has been blowing over these links for more than 450 years, making the 1562 course the 5th oldest course in the world!

One thing is for sure, ever time I have walked of the 18th green, it’s been with a smile, regardless of whether I was wearing a t-shirt and suntan or a beanie and waterproofs.

Montrose Golf Links – Broomfield Course

There is also the shorter Broomfield course which makes a golf break here an ideal place to stay and play.  This gives you some variety and the option of playing 18 or 36 holes in a day.

Pro Shop – Montrose Golf Links

Reduced Green Fees

The 1562 course is £30 a round from now until 27 March 2020 which is excellent value for a Top 100 course.  The Broomfield course is only £15 over the same period.  You can book both courses at Montrose Golf Links online here.

Montrose has several hotels that are all within walking distance of the golf courses.  Like the courses, the hotel rates are lower in the quieter part of the golfing calendar.

9 Reasons To Head To Ayrshire For Some Winter Golf

Winter Golf in Ayrshire – It may not be your first thought to book a golfing break in Scotland over the winter! But it is a sure fire way to play some of the best courses when they are a lot quieter & at a fraction of their peak season price.

The reasons for reduced green fees may be because you will be playing off winter mats & winter tees?  Winter greens may be in operation or there may be restrictions on visitor tee times? The clubhouse may not be open for changing, showering, food & drink before & after golf?

If you stick to links courses, you find that there is a better chance that the full course will be open most of the time, without winter greens.  You may also be able to avoid mats on some links courses or play from the first cut of rough.

By keeping an eye on the weather forecast, you increase your chances of ticking off some top courses, at half their summer price.

If you are able to stay close to the golf course, you can keep a good eye on what the local weather is like. You may be able to move your tee time whilst waiting for a change in the weather or for the frost to lift.

And finally, if the clubhouse is closed when you finish, it doesn’t matter, as you are staying close by!

Here are nine top links courses which are ideal for winter golf in Ayrshire.  they all offer greatly reduced green fees over the winter months.

Southerness Golf Club & Powfoot GC – 2 Gems of the Solway Firth

A couple of great green fee deals can be found in South West Scotland this winter. If you venture down to the Solway Firth, you'll find Southerness Golf Club (£40) & Powfoot Golf Club (£23) are offering excellent deals until the end of March 2020.
We've selected the Station Hotel in Dumfries & the Powfoot Hotel as a good match with these courses.

The reasons for reduced green fees can be many, so you may want to know the following before teeing off:-

Will you be playing off winter mats & winter tees?  Are winter greens in operation and are there any restrictions visitor tee times?

Is the clubhouse open for changing, showering, food & drink before & after golf?

A lot of our courses are prone to early morning frost so a later tee time maybe a good idea. Don't make it too late, as it gets dark a lot quicker in the winter.  Additionally, the use of buggies may not be allowed if ground conditions are unsafe.

The benefits of staying close to the golf course is that you can keep a good eye on what the local weather is like. You maybe able to move your tee time whilst waiting for a change in the weather.  You may be able to push back your tee time, if there is frost & winter greens. And finally, it may not be an issue if the clubhouse is closed when you finish, as you are staying close by!

The Station Hotel is a beautiful Victorian building only a 5-minute walk from the town centre. It still retains many original features, and offers free Wi-Fi and free parking.
